Frank Anderson 06.06.25

Dear Families

Welcome to the final half-term of academic year 2025! I hope that you all had a lovely break – we have lots to look forward to in what is already looking like a very busy half term.

What’s happening next year?

It is about this time of year the jungle drums start beating with everyone wondering what teachers will be where and any changes for next year. I will be sharing everything that I know to date in our annual ‘bumper’ newsletter, which will come out on 4th July, this is the same day the classes and class teachers will be shared, including for our new reception families. Transfer day, when children get to spend a day/morning with their new class and teacher is on 7th July but more information in later weeks to follow about that.

NPAT Poetry Slam

We have also launched our NPAT Poetry Slam competition which is something that we take part in every year! We love poetry at EHPS – we learn a performance poem every half term and we even came joint runners up in the poetry competition “Poetry Together”

What you need to know about the NPAT Poetry competition

The theme of this year’s challenge is to learn a poem by heart. You are never alone if you know a poem by heart! Children will perform their poem to their class. The winning class poem will be performed in assembly to the whole school and the overall winner will be filmed and entered NPAT Poetry Slam finals.

Top Tips for entering the Poetry Slam

  • Read lots of poetry books
  • Ask others what their favourite poems are
  • Have a go at writing your own
  • Ask an adult to help you find a poem on the internet
  • Ask an adult to watch some videos of people performing poems to get some top tips…

Frank Anderson

As part of Year 5’s history unit, we were lucky enough to have Northampton Saints club Historian, Graham McKehnie, zoom in from the Saints Foundation on Thursday to teach the children all about Frank Anderson.

Frank was born in Northampton in 1978 and was the first Saints’ mixed-race player. He rose out of a Victorian slum to play for his hometown team, and then later fought in the First World War. The children also learnt about Walter Tull who was a professional footballer for The Cobblers and a British Army officer of Afro-Caribbean descent. Bertie Clarke was a West Indian international cricketer who played frequently for Northampton. We feel it is good to learn about important people who helped shape our counties’ heritage within our curriculum.

The children asked and listened to some excellent questions and answers.

Good Luck Year 4

Next week, our Year 4 children start their multiplication checks, learning timetables is really important for future mathematical and life learning so we with them all the very best.

Finally, please can I end with some reminders:

  • Please apply suncream on your children in the mornings on those sunny days
  • Label everything – including sun hats and water bottles!
  • You can only park in the car park if you have a school parking pass or disabled badge – otherwise, please do not even enter it.
  • A reminder to be respectful about staff and the school online (please see our Parent Code of Conduct for more information). If you ever do have a worry, question or complaint, then my door and email box are always open.

Lastly, if you are free on 14th June, why not pop down to see the Northants Carnival Parade and cheer on our ‘fiery’ float!

See you after the weekend.
